What is Physical Therapy?
Pediatric physical therapists treat musculoskeletal problems and improve the mobility of children with a variety of conditions including cerebral palsy, coordination disorder, brain injuries, scoliosis and developmental delays.
After a comprehensive evaluation, the physical therapist develops a treatment plan that includes pertinent goals and objectives. Therapists work to improve children’s motor development, strength, range of motion, endurance, balance, coordination, gait difficulties, heart and lung endurance, and delayed motor development using a variety of therapeutic treatment techniques.
Pediatric physical therapists also provide home exercises, since improving physical function often requires daily practice. Therapists coordinate care and communicate with schools and daycares as well as other healthcare professionals when necessary. With the help from pediatric physical therapists, children are able to function and maneuver throughout their environment as independently as possible at home, in school and out in the community.
